Held at the Hospital Rehabilitasi Cheras on 30 January 2020, the free workshop was in particular aimed at introducing audiologists on how to encourage patients to be more involved in their hearing management and teaching the audiologist on the techniques to engage patients own motivation to change.
The participants in the workshop were 25 MANSA members from varieties of sectors and organization (government, universities, private sector).
The following core concepts were covered in the training workshop:
- Spirit of Motivational Interviewing
- Principals of Motivational Interviewing and
- Basic Techniques of Motivational Interviewing
The workshop was filled with a lively discussion session, interactive role-play and fruitful brainstorming. The invited speaker, Prof. Dr Firdaus Mukhtar was able to convey the information and lecture in such a way that attracts participants to be actively involved in all the session. It was indeed an informational and successful workshop.
The materials are currently available in English and will be made available in other UN languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish) shortly through the World Hearing day webpage. Thanks to the World Hearing Forum working group on World Hearing Day, the flyers and infographic will also be available in Turkish, Georgian, Portuguese, Hindi, Bengali, and Swahili. These include:

Stay tuned as
- WHO-CGHH innovative small grants scheme for World Hearing Day kicked-off last year. In 2019, 16 organisations were granted $750 to support their WHD activities. This year, the small grant has grown and will be granting $800 to 20 eligible organisations. Applications will open shortly.
- Basic Ear and Hearing Care Resource, designed to be useful to a wide range of primary health care personnel for preventing and addressing ear diseases and hearing loss. It also shows that, with understanding and the necessary support, hearing loss should not limit a person’s life
The 2020 South African Association of Audiologists (SAAA) Congress is due to take place in Sandton Convention Centre, Johannesburg, South Africa from 30th October to 1st November 2020. Registration will be opened starting on 1st April 2020!

Professor Dr Firdaus Mukhtar, born in Kuala Lumpur is a Consultant Clinical Psychologist currently is the Head Department of Psychiatry, Universiti Putra Malaysia. Dr. Firdaus pursued her undergraduate degree in Psychology at IIU Malaysia (1995-1999), and both postgraduate study in Australia.
At International Level, she was nominated as President-elect for Asian Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) Association (2018-2021) . Her works has been recognized as Best Research Award at International Brain and Behavior Conference, Greece. World Health Organization has appointed Dr Firdaus as CBT Expert Consultant to conduct and develop CBT manual and training to all Family Medicine Specialist in the country. The highest spark in her career was when she was awarded as Young Scientist Award by Loreal Malaysia due to her excellent contribution in research on CBT and immunology. She has trained CBT skills to various types of groups such as both psychiatric and medical illness patients, medical doctors, FMS and Psychiatry Specialist, counsellors and community at large not just in Malaysia but also in the area of South East Asia. She was appointed as peer-reviewers for both local and international journals. She has more than 40 publications in books (3 CBT books on depression and anxiety) and research papers, both at the local and international’s level.
